DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE = 聖經辭典
With unfeigned thanks to God we now send forth this book which we believe to be, next to the Bible itself, the most important gift to the Christian Church in the land within this generation. It was the repeated appeal of missionaries from all parts of China which
moved the C.L.S. to attempt this great task. This appeal was strongly sup- ported by some of the leading Chinese Christians whom we consulted. The liberality of a friend in Canada enabled us to initiate the scheme without any cost to the Society, and the efficient co-operation of over thirty contributors from various parts of the field brought not only relief to the editors, but a wealth of experience which has been invaluable. The names of these appear on a separate page, and the whole Church in China will feel that they have en- riched this volume with treasures old and new. Special thanks are due to the Rev. G.A. Clayton of Hankow who has most kindly prepared, at much cost of time and labour, the Index of Texts It is right to state that though Hastings' world-famed Bible Dictionary was adopted as the basis for this work, the various translators and writers were given full liberty to deal with each article as he or she thought most conducive to the highest purpose of guiding and stimulating thought in the minds of the Chinese readers, for whom it has been primarily prepared. Some notes will be found in Chinese to serve as suggestions to them how to use the book wisely and profitably.
