Study of John Calvin's View of Christian's Choice of Suitable Spouse, A
Christian marriages are facing significant challenges. The beautiful institution of marriage created by God was once understood as a fundamental structure for society and humanity. However, it is now devalued as outdated and unimportant. The purpose of marriage should be mutual love, procreation, the expansion of the church, and the manifestation of God's glory. Unfortunately, it is now perceived as merely fulfilling sensual desires. Christians, too, hold misguided views on marriage, leading them to choose unsuitable spouses and placing many of them at risk of divorce. In this context, gaining an understanding of God's intended purpose for marriage and exercising caution in choosing a spouse becomes crucial. This paper aims to explore John Calvin's perspectives on Christian spouse selection, assisting in fostering a correct understanding of marriage and making appropriate choices in partners to prevent potential issues in marriage.
Misconceptions about marriage and mate selection persisted during Calvin's era. Calvin addressed these issues by providing teachings based on biblical principles and implementing corresponding regulations and laws. His efforts contributed to the reformation of Western theology and legal aspects, with an emphasis on the covenant concept to describe marriage. The covenant not only portrayed the relationship between spouses but also reflected an individual's covenant with God. Calvin stressed that the purpose of marriage is mutual love, avoidance of immorality, and fulfilling the biblical mandate to be fruitful and multiply, ultimately aiming to better serve God.In summary, Calvin's viewpoints underscore the importance of a proper understanding of the sacred purpose of marriage and the judicious selection of a spouse to foster the health and stability of Christian marriages.
